Eulogy for Isobel Kirk Vernon

Created by Peter 13 years ago
Isobel Kirk Buchanan was born on the 25th day of March 1942, at the local hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, to William and Ann Buchanan. Her dad William was a miner and sadly died before Isobel had barely reached her teens through an illness caused by coal dust he had breathed in during his work underground. Her mum Ann, was a very independent lady who went out to work as a council cleaner to support her family after Williams tragic death; Isobel also had a sister named Margaret. Isobel’s name [Isobel Kirk] had been a family name for a number of generations; Isobel was the last one. Her formative years were spent in Scotland and Isobel attended Kirkcaldy Grammar School. It must have been there that Isobel developed a hunger for learning as Peter describes her as having an amazing ability to answer the most obscure questions as they watched quiz shows together ‘where did that answer come from’? Indeed, Isobel was a very knowledgeable lady who went on to do some amazing exploits during her lifetime. Isobel leaves two wonderful sons, Ian and Paul, two wonderful daughters in law, Joanne and Kim and two wonderful grandchildren, Rachel and Alexander. Isobel always wanted to have daughters and said that Joanne and Kim were the best daughters a mum could want. Sadly, Joanne and Rachel cannot be here with us today due to medical circumstances… they both so wanted to be here to support Peter. Isobel met Peter at a cricket match being played in High Wycombe during the 1972/1973 season. Peter was playing and Isobel was ‘Doing the Teas’… it was love at first sight said Peter [I’m sure he meant Isobel and not the cup of golden nectar]. They married at Maidenhead Registry Office on November 24th 1974. Isobel’s hobby was golf where she played off 18, became Lady Captain at Bushy Golf and Country Club and reached the quarterfinals of the Hertfordshire Ladies Golfing Association Tournament. Amazingly, another of her hobbies was flying [yes I did say flying]. She learned to fly at Ellestree Aerodrome and for the cost of just the fuel, would fly over to France, have lunch, then fly back home. Peter told me that the funny thing was that Isobel hated flying as a passenger in a jet when they travelled to and from Spain… she just felt safer when it was her hands on the controls; she also ran the aero club bar for a while. Isobel mostly worked in offices, mainly doing the paperwork for salaries and wages; she went on to manage Radlett Country Club for many years and this is where Ian and Paul grew up. From G-Plan to the Tote Organisation, Isobel was there doing a great job, making a difference and growing the businesses that she managed. Isobel loved her little dog called Hastings… named after the Belgian detective’s side-kick but she was not too keen on being called Bel by Peter… a term of endearment Peter assures me… she got used to it in the end; she just did not like names being shortened. Isobel loved Country music, the Carpenters, Mama Cass and songs from the 60’s; she also loved shopping [retail therapy]. She loved honesty and good manners, did not like lies and would not entertain anything illegal. Peter and Isobel had a couple of holidays in Southern Spain and looked there at the possibility of buying a property for their retirement, but being concerned at the probability of new neighbours every couple of weeks, decided against it. Isobel loved the mountains and in the end they went for Camposol where they believed they would be living in more of a community atmosphere. They bought their house but as many others, had to spend some time in rental properties until their villa on sector D was completed. Moving out in 2002 the spent a time in the Port of Mazarron in a rental off the Via Axial; that property got flooded and Isobel ended up with a chest infection. They then moved to a rental on sector C and after some amazing help from the infamous Miguel who pulled out all the stops and completed the villa quickly, when hearing that Isobel was unwell, finally moved into their home in early 2004. Peter and Isobel did lot’s of exploring around the area spending many a happy hour sipping coffee and people watching down on the Paseo [a regular pastime of many people who live around here!]. Isobel loved bingo, played a couple of games of golf and both she and Peter made many new friends with people who lived locally to them on sector D. ‘What a wonderful crowd of people’ Peter described those who live around them. Peter would like to thank all his friends and neighbours for all of their help during this very difficult time. A special thank you must go to Carol and Ron for being great neighbours and for their love, friendship help and understanding, especially during Isobel’s illness and over the past week; in Peter’s own words ‘ You have been brilliant’. Isobel, thank you for your life’s example of what can be achieved and how you did the best you could with every opportunity you had; you will be so missed by everyone who knew you, God bless you
